Description

Koh Ha Yai is one of  the best places for scuba diving in the southern Andaman Sea. Koh Ha Yai is a group of Islands in the middle of the ocean. The bottom descends to 40+ meters and there are very good diving and snorkelling areas for every level of experience. The water is always clear and warm and there is always a sheltered side for the in water activities behind one of the islands, if the weather is a bit rough.

The Lagoon is cradled by the main Island and in its sandy bottom you can find all kinds of marine life with the coral formations and rock clusters. This area is perfect for the introduction divers, students and snorkelers.  The beautiful little Blacktip Reef Sharks like to play in the lagoon area and are frequently spotted by the snorkelers here. For the more experienced divers Koh Haa offers gently sloping bottom all the way to 40 meters, or cliffs, walls and steps going to the same depth.

What Koh Ha Yai is most famous for, however, are its caverns and canyons. There is a big cave that you can dive in and ascend up to the surface to marvel the cave roof arching away some 10 meters above the surface. This famous cave is called the Cathedral. Another famous cave is called the Chimney that starts at 5 meters depth as a little more than a 1×1 meter hole. Once you dive head first in, the cave opens up and you will easily find your way to the exit at 18 meter below the surface. There are normally schools of fish here that like to live in the shadows of the cave.

There are many other canyons and rock formations that open up to a soft coral garden or a stone yard that make diving here especially interesting.  Koh Ha Yai also has a very rich marine life with soft and hard corals and all kinds of fish from small Seahorses or Ghost Pipefish to Stingrays, Octopus, or even an occasional Whale Shark or Manta Ray that are both also often seen in the dive sites of Koh Ha Yai.

Getting to know your equipment and the exiting adventure that awaits you. Your instructor will explain what will happen today as you try diving with Scuba equipment. There is plenty of time on the way out to this beautiful dive site to have a through briefing of what diving is all about, how to dive, how to use the scuba diving equipment and what you can expect to see.

After the first dive its time to relax and enjoy a bit of refreshments before you will have another briefing with your instructor to see what will happen on dive number 2 and what you should pay attention to in order to make your dive as enjoyable as possible, And don’t worry if the first dive felt a bit confusing and like there were a lot of new, moving parts. This is completely normal and you will be surprised how much easier everything is on the second dive.
